A decal is an editable fill layer projected by a Blender image Empty. Move, rotate or scale the Empty to position artwork while its PBR channels, masks, blending and opacity remain editable.
Create and position a decal
- Choose Add Layer › Decal. Supply a name, base-color image and size.
- The decal Empty appears at the 3D cursor facing the viewport. Move, rotate and scale it in Blender.
- Assign Base Color, Roughness, Metallic, Normal, Height or Emission images in the layer's channel controls.
- Set Projection Depth, Edge Softness and Front Faces Only to control coverage.
- Use Select Decal Object to find the Empty again. Duplicate Decal or Shift+D creates another independently placed layer sharing the images.
Projection and channels
The Empty's local XY plane carries the image and its negative Z axis projects it onto the surface. Image alpha combines with projection coverage. Decal normals rotate with the Empty and are transformed into the target mesh's tangent frame before blending. The live viewport, export and snapshots use the decal's transform; Open Graph also exposes its transform and depth.
For brush-based placement see Material Stamp; generated regional artwork is covered under the Assistant. Reference: decal objects.
